The New York Yankees did not always enjoy the standard of being the professional sports franchise with the most world championships. In the beginning they were barely competitive. In actuality the Yankees were the Highlanders, a franchise moved to New York from Baltimore by two New York bartenders for $18,000. In 1912 they became the Yankees thanks to their unofficial nickname "Yanks" being easier to squeeze into newspaper headlines.
Although the Yankees had some great individual players in those early days like Jack Chesboro and Wee Willie Keeler, it wasn't until 1920 when Babe Ruth entered the picture they became a franchise equated with winning. Through the years legends like Gherig, DiMaggio, Mantle, and current captain Derek Jeter have carried on the winning tradition.
